Must I Fresh paint An Outdoors Concrete Porch Or Carpet It

Painting a concrete porch offers unlimited color choices.

A dull gray concrete porch can be uninviting, even when filled with patio furniture and lush green plants. Livening up the floor can transform the entire space. The problem is, it's difficult to change the look of concrete without a lot of work. Carpet can add softness and pattern, but may not look as attractive as paint.

Labor

The amount of labor involved, whether you are doing the project yourself or paying someone else to do it, is much greater with paint than with carpet. This is because the concrete must be thoroughly cleaned, etched, taped off and primed prior to painting. Most surfaces require at least two coats of paint as well, and painting is time consuming. In addition, if the concrete was previously painted, the old coat of paint must be removed before fresh paint is applied. To put down carpet, the concrete is cleaned, any uneven spots repaired and the carpet is then glued to the porch.

Durability

The length of time a coat of paint or carpeting will last on a concrete porch depends greatly on the quality of materials used, weather exposure and traffic patterns. In general, however, outdoor carpet will wear better and last longer than paint. Even outdoor paint designed for concrete will begin to fade and peel within a few years. Quality outdoor carpet can last for 10 years or more.

Cost

The cost of painting a concrete porch versus carpeting it are fairly similar and depend on the type of paint or carpet used as well as the number of coats of paint needed. A medium grade carpet is typically less expensive than several coats of high quality primer and paint. The biggest cost difference is in labor if it is necessary to pay to have the porch painted or carpeted. Labor costs for installing carpet are much less than those for painting.

Choices

Paint offers a wider variety of color options than carpet. It is simple to match the color of the paint to an exterior house color or to other decor on the porch. In addition, custom patterns and designs can be painted on the porch, such as a faux rug or tiles. While carpet is available in many colors and styles, the range is not as broad and it is expensive to purchase custom colors or designs.

Appearance

Inexpensive indoor/outdoor carpet, like styles designed to look like grass, are not considered attractive by many people and could detract from the appearance of an otherwise elegant house. It can be difficult to find outdoor carpet that is beautiful and durable. Many homeowners prefer the look of paint over carpet on outdoor concrete surfaces. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, and the most attractive option is the one the homeowner likes the best. Popular opinion could be important, however, if the home is being put up for sale or rent.
