Vinyl Siding Design Suggestions For A Ranch Style Home

There are several ways in which vinyl siding can spruce up the look of your ranch-style home.

A ranch-style house can seem characterless; the long frontage without depth or height variation simply seems monotonous to the passerby. Getting creative with vinyl siding, however, can perk up this plain construction.

Varied Colors

When purchasing vinyl siding from a contractor, the merchandise comes in a precounted pieces package. If you ask your salesperson, you can order more than one color to go on your home. Placing a darker color on the bottom of the home and changing halfway up to a lighter color with give character and the appearance of height to your home. This color difference may be as subtle as one shade or as bold as going from black to white. You can pick two complementary colors such as a pale green on the bottom and a soft shade of yellow to complete the project. For those with a more creative flair, consider using three or more shades or even three or more colors, graduating the colors from darkest to lightest. Check any homeowner's association rules, if they apply, prior to choosing any bold or loud colors, because some neighborhoods have restrictions.

Sectioning

A ranch home is typically divided visually in front by a door. If your door is off center, you can divide the home into sections by adding vinyl siding to one side of the door. If you have a centered door, you may want to use siding only halfway up the home. You can also vary the color of the vinyl siding on each side of the house: make the front and rear one color and the sides another color. Different shades of the same color make for a subtle change, while opposing or complementary colors make for a marked difference.

Paint

If your home is already covered with vinyl siding, you're not stuck with the colors you have. Vinyl siding can be painted through a process of priming followed by spray coating. You can make a small change by painting only the top two lines and bottom two lines of siding to a new color. If your house is white, you might consider a pale or pastel stripe around the house. If your house is already a darker shade, you can lighten it up with a bright or pale color. You might want to paint just the front of the house a new color, or just the bottom or top half. If you're feeling particularly creative, you can paint only a few of the vinyl strips a new shade of your existing color to give it some punch.
