Interior Faux Painting Ideas

Use faux painting in your home for unique effects.

When you add faux painting to the interior of your home, you add character and create a home that is unique and colorful. Most faux-paint techniques require a small amount of trial and error before committing the treatment to the walls. Practice first on a large piece of poster board to get the effect you want. When you are comfortable with the results, dive in and tackle that faux-painting project.

Sponging on

Sponging paint on the wall is one of the simplest techniques to use when it comes to faux painting. It involves the application of various paints onto the walls with a soft sponge, dabbing over and over until the entire wall is covered. The more colors you use, the greater the illusion of depth and texture.

Faux Venetian Plaster

Faux Venetian plaster imitates the look of an old plastered wall. It is achieved by applying layers of undiluted paint with a trowel. It gives a textured look that is still smooth to the touch. It is best applied to a smooth flat surface to avoid damage to the walls due to the use of the trowel. Use four different paint colors for the best effect. Work while the paint is still wet for an easier application.

Craquelure

Craquelure is the look of furniture and walls that appears quite aged and cracked. The paint appears to have cracked and may, in fact, be falling off. As strange as it may sound, this effect is actually quite lovely when used as a faux technique. Water-based crackle varnishes are used to achieve this effect and are preferable to oil-based material, as they have less odor and work through the process of evaporation. Water-based crackle varnish can be tinted to suit your decor. Consult a paint professional for complete application procedures.
