Vinyl siding is a durable and popular exterior home finish that offers the visual appeal of traditional wood siding without the vulnerability to weather and subsequent expensive periodic repainting or restaining required. Whether estimating a new vinyl siding installation or determining the amount of existing vinyl siding covering a house, determining how much siding is involved is an easy procedure of gathering basic measurements and applying a basic mathematic formula.
Instructions
1. Choose an exterior wall of your home to begin the measurements. Use a tape measure to determine the height dimension of the wall, from the soffit or overhang to the base of the wall finish. Note this measurement as the height of this wall section. Next, measure the full length of the same wall section from corner to corner and note this measurement as the length of this wall section.
2. Compute the area of the wall. Multiplying the height measurement from Step 1 times the length measurement from Step 2 to define the area in square feet.
3. Subtract the door and window areas from the wall area. Measure the height of each door, from the threshold to the top jamb, and the width of the door opening. Measure the height of each window from the sill to the top of the window and the width from side to side. Calculate the area of each door and window by multiplying the height times the width to get the square foot area of each. Add the areas together to get the total the door and window areas, then subtract that total area from the wall area determined in Step 3. This is the area of siding needed for this particular wall. Document and number each door and window measurement for later reference.
4. Repeat Steps 1, 2 and 3 for each exterior wall getting vinyl siding installed. When you have completed the area calculation for each wall, add them together to get the total area of vinyl siding required for the house. All vinyl siding types are sold based on square feet of wall area. The window dimensions gathered and retained can be used in ordering the various flashing and trim elements needed with the siding.
5. Complete the vinyl siding estimate by counting of the corners around the perimeter of the house and noting the vertical measurement of each for the total linear corner trim needed.
