Choose Kitchen Colors

A monochromatic color scheme creates a clean, modern look.

Whether you are painting a couple of walls or starting from scratch in a brand new kitchen, the color scheme you choose sets the tone for the cooking, eating, family gathering, entertaining, homework and other activities that may take place in your kitchen. There are thousands of colors from which to choose, but don't let the task intimidate you. Focus on how your family uses the kitchen and the rest of the decisions will be easier to make.

Instructions

1. Consider the general effect of color and decide what overall tone you want your kitchen to have. Choose cheerful shades of yellow or blue for walls if you want your kitchen to look homey and welcoming. Go with earth tones for a calming space or grays and whites for a clean, professional looking kitchen.

2. Decide which element of the kitchen decor is most important to you--wall color, cabinets, appliances or flooring. Make subsequent color decisions based on the priority item. For instance, if cherry-wood cabinets are your priority, choose wall and flooring colors that work with cherry tones. Choose warm colors to contrast with must-have stainless steel appliances, or cool shades to complement them.

3. Take color cues from the rest of your home. Carry the existing color scheme from other public rooms in your home into the kitchen to create a sense of space and cohesion.

4. Browse through the kitchen display areas of home centers and appliance stores. Make notes on color combinations you like. Ask salespeople to advise you on the "new look" in kitchen decor if you like trendy design, or traditional looks if you prefer a more enduring color scheme.

5. Accentuate the strengths of your kitchen with color and play down its weaknesses. Paint walls white or in light shades and use light-colored flooring and countertop materials if your kitchen is windowless and dark. Choose colors with a vintage look if you must keep older appliances or other "outdated" materials; or deflect attention from the age of your kitchen by using a fresh, modern color scheme.
