Painting Aluminum Siding Versus Changing With Vinyl Siding

Remodeling the exterior of a building can be a costly endeavor. There are many options available when either painting the existing siding or replacing with a new type of siding such as vinyl. Each siding option has positive and negative points to consider. The cost of repairing the aluminum siding may be less than replacing it with vinyl siding. Vinyl siding requires removal or coverage of the old siding material before it can be installed, which will require extra materials for the removal of scrap and trash.

Repainting Aluminum Siding

Aluminum siding can be painted repeatedly to replace old paint or to change the appearance of the building. Vinyl siding comes manufactured with a set color and should not be repainted because of bonding issues between the paint and vinyl; the average lifespan of vinyl siding is 20 years.

Appearance

Aluminum siding has a sharper appearance than vinyl siding. This is because metal can be stamped with detailed designs while plastic is molded and has softer features. As a result, aluminum siding tends to have a more wood-like appearance while vinyl siding looks manufactured. Another point to consider is that vinyl usually retains its appearance when impacted, while aluminum siding is more susceptible to damage. If the aluminum material is in disrepair, replacement with a vinyl siding may be the better option.

Cost

As long as the aluminum siding is in a good condition, repainting a home will most likely cost less than re-siding it. Prior to installing vinyl siding over aluminum material, rigid foam insulation needs to be installed. This type of insulation is sandwiched between the two sidings, and will add to the cost of the vinyl siding installation.
