Painting a brick wall helps it blend in.
Exposed brick walls can provide a focal point in a room. However, too much of a good thing, including exposed brick, may overpower other interesting features in the room. And if a fireplace is nestled in the midst of the wall, it may feel as if there is nothing else is in the room besides brick. Minimizing the focus on the brick wall and drawing attention to other elements will result in a more balanced room.
Instructions
1. Cover the brick wall, including the fireplace, with a fresh coat of interior latex paint in a color that matches the other walls in the room. This helps to draw attention away from the brick wall, as it will blend with the other wall colors.
2. Paint an accent wall, the large brick wall and fireplace, two shades darker than the rest of the walls. Darker colors tend to make walls appear smaller. The brick wall will remain the focal point, while being downplayed a bit.
3. Place a piece of furniture, such as a large bookshelf, in front of the brick wall and fill it with books, greenery, pottery and vases, creating a focal point in front of the wall.
4. Position two chairs on either side of the fireplace to provide cozy seating that hides some of the brick wall.
5. Hang an oversize piece of artwork on the brick wall to break up the expansive wall and draw attention to the art.
6. Position a decorative floor lamp beside a sofa or chair placed in front of the brick wall, illuminating the seating area in lieu of the brick.
7. Situate a large pot on one side of the fireplace hearth and a green plant, such as a palm or ficus tree, on the other side to add balance, texture and warmth to the room.
8. Hang a large mirror on the brick wall above the fireplace to reflect other areas of the room besides the brick wall.
