Fresh paint Faces On Rocks

Paint faces on a variety of rock shapes and sizes.

Many nature lovers enjoy using natural materials to create their art, believing in the symbolism and energies that natural elements possess. When painting faces on rocks, you are transforming nature into a piece of decorative art or home decor. Drawing and painting on rocks is easy. Beginning painters, and those with little or no drawing skills, can paint rocks in just a few steps.

Instructions

1. Locate a rock with a smooth surface for painting. Purchase rocks or gather them from your natural surroundings. Scrub the rock clean, using a sponge, dish soap and water. Allow to dry for about 20 minutes.

2. Print the image of a face for reference. You can choose a lifelike face or illustration. Start with simple images if you are a beginner. Resize the image to size and shape of the rock before printing.

3. Place a piece of graphite transfer paper onto the rock, face down, then place your photo reference on top. Trace the facial features, including eyes, eyebrows, nose and lips, using a pencil.

4. Paint the rock, using skin-tone paint, with a craft brush. Use inexpensive craft brushes for painting, as expensive artist brushes may be ruined when painting on textured rocks. You can choose any color for the first layer of paint. Allow to dry for about one hour. You can also opt to leave the rock its natural color.

5. Paint the whites of the eyes, then the iris. Add details in the iris of the eyes, if desired, by adding all the colors you see in the photo. For instance, for hazel eyes, add details of brown and yellow. Paint the pupils, eye outline and the iris with black paint. Add a dot of white for the light in the eye. Paint the eyebrows with brown or black paint.

6. Paint an outline for the nose using a black or brown paint.

7. Paint the lips with dark pink or red paint. Add highlights using a paint color one shade lighter than the base color for the lips.

8. Paint shadows and highlights on the skin using the approach in Step 7. Blend the different shades by feathering the brush, where the edges meet, for a smooth transition.
