A country home can be simple plank siding with a stone foundation.
A home built in a countryside area should blend well with the natural surroundings. For example, it's nice to have a brick or stone house in pale brown tones versus bright red brick in a mountain area. By using materials and colors that help the house fit into the landscape, you will create a better look for your house overall. Natural materials such as clay or rocks can be used to construct a house and landscaping in an eco-friendly way.
Instructions
1. Buy property with a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees you can incorporate into the building process. Do this by using materials that complement what's on your land. Use aged beams of cedar, for example, versus cutting down your own cedar trees. Use local river rocks or natural stone cut to construct a foundation, porch columns or chimney. Use those same rocks and stone to construct benches on the property for enjoying the view.
2. Construct the home's foundation 4 to 6 feet deep with cinder blocks. Cover the exterior side of the blocks with cut stones indigenous to the region. Talk with others who have used these types of stone to figure out the best designs and use mortar appropriately. Reserve identical stone used on the foundation to construct a matching stone chimney for the house.
3. Buy 2-by-12-inch lumber to build floor joists. Cut 2-by-8-inch boards to build the framework of the house with a circular saw. Cover the roof with ½-inch plywood sheathing and install a roof of cedar shakes. Purchase cedar shakes that have been treated with proper materials to last many years. Cover the exterior of the house with ½-inch plywood sheathing, followed by 8-inch wide wooden planks, neutral-colored bricks or stone found in the immediate region.
4. Emphasize natural materials in finishing the interior of the house. Construct walls of 6- to 10-inch wide tongue-and-groove pine along one wall of the living area, for example. Install a bookcase wall unit of pine finished in polyurethane to emphasize the natural "knots" and beauty of the wood. Build a seating area at a bay window, for example, using stone for the base and 18 to 24-inch wide planks for the seating area.
5. Construct porch railings of 10- to 15-inch timber posts or split rails to emphasize forested areas surrounding your property. Build front steps with river rocks 6 to 8 inches in diameter held by mortar on the sides of the stairs. Lay flat, rough stones about 1 foot square on the tread area. Construct hand railings on the steps of rough timber secured to the steps with metal fittings and concrete anchor bolts.
