Seal Fresh paint To Stucco

The consistancy of stucco has kept many buildings from being painted.

Stucco is a mixture of concrete and sand poured over wire. If the mixture isn't just right, it will affect the texture of the wall. This can also make painting the surface a challenge, as the stucco can shift over time as the building settles. There are techniques that you can use to seal the paint to the stucco and lessen the risk of the paint flaking, peeling, blistering or cracking on the stucco surface.

Instructions

1. Remove any numbers, letters, light fixtures or other object that is attached to the outside wall with a screwdriver or other necessary tool. For the best paint job, you will want the paint to be behind any of these objects.

2. Power-wash the stucco wall. As with any surface you are preparing to paint, you want to make sure the stucco is as clean as possible. A wide stream power-wash will clean the surface, but be careful not to get the stream too close to the wall or you may damage it. Do not move the pressure wand in closer than 1 foot from the wall.

3. Repair damaged areas of the wall. If there are any cracks, they will need to be filled in. This can be done with caulk or sealant, depending on the size of the crack. Make sure that any loose sections of stucco are removed and repaired as well. The more damage you can remove from the wall, the longer the applied paint will last.

4. Apply an acrylic masonry primer. Allow the wall to dry at least 24 hours after the pressure wash. This will prevent the sand in the wall from holding moisture and breaking down the stucco even quicker. The acrylic masonry primer will bond to the stucco and provide the right type of surface tension for the paint to adhere and seal to.

5. Paint the stucco once the primer dries. Use a quality acrylic latex or elastomeric paint. Either of these paints will help to prevent chipping or cracking in the paint as the stucco moves over time. All of these steps will ensure a good seal and bond of the paint to the stucco building.
