Fresh paint A Flowerpot Therefore It Lasts Outdoors

The raised design on this planter helps make the lizard stand out.

Painting decorative flowerpots is a fun and easy project -- even your kids can help. You'll want these personalized flowerpots to last through many summers outside. All you need are some basic painting tools, house paint and a little imagination. Terracotta clay pots are the easiest to paint, but resin and fiberglass pots can be painted too.

Instructions

1. Use exterior house paint -- it is designed to hold up well outside and will last a long time without peeling or fading. Leftover paint from your home's exterior paint will make flowerpots and planters match your house. Check paint and hardware stores for mistints -- paint that was tinted the wrong color -- it is usually available for just a few dollars a gallon.

2. When painting terracotta pots and concrete planters, ignore the directions to paint on a dry surface. The first thing to do is thoroughly wet down the pot. Then paint on the first coat of exterior house paint. The damp surface sucks in the paint and will prevent it from peeling later. Paint around the edge on the inside to where you expect the soil level to be. Subsequent coats can be applied after the paint is dry; no re-wetting is necessary.

3. It usually turns out best to paint a light-colored background and then let your imagination go wild. Stripes of any colors are easy and a surprise to see in a garden. Use black and white to paint a cow pattern on the pot. Dress your children in their grubbies and let them do finger painting, hand prints or whatever they fancy.

4. Resin and fiberglass pots and planters can also be painted, although wetting them down isn't necessary because they are not porous to begin with. If they have a glossy finish, scuff it up first with some sandpaper. Otherwise, no special preparation or priming is necessary -- just start painting.

5. Some flowerpots have raised designs, which makes it really easy to paint because the design is already there. All you have to do is highlight the raised parts with different colors.
