Art Training On Fresh paint Rocks

Artist's paintbrushes are used to paint rocks.

For novice and experienced painters alike, painting rocks offers an interesting alternative to painting on canvas. It also provides a great craft opportunity for kids, who can experiment with different patterns and images on their own rocks with a little adult supervision. A beautiful painted rock can make a thoughtful gift for someone, particularly if you immortalize their pet or favorite animal on it.

Instructions

1. Search for rocks by the river or the beach. Look for stones that resemble curled up animals or have the right texture for a particular creature, such as a spiked hedgehog. Collect flat, smooth rocks that are ideal for 2D portraits, with a picture on one side. Purchase stones from a landscaping supplier if you cannot get to a river or beach.

2. Scrub rocks with a scrubbing brush, detergent and warm water to remove all dirt. Leave the rocks to dry for several days, to prevent the paint flaking off or bubbling.

3. Apply wood filler to gaps and flaws in the rock if you desire a smooth surface. Follow the manufacturer's directions for use.

4. Apply a thin base coat of gesso, a surface primer, to the rock to help the paint adhere to the surface. Leave it to dry.

5. Sketch the basic outline of your animal or image in pencil or chalk.

6. Apply your artist's acrylic paint in your chosen manner. A thick application of paint works well for 2D images in bright colors, such as beach scenes. Several delicate layers of paint give a watercolor effect, which helps to create texture, for example when painting the fur of an animal.

7. Leave the painted rock to cure for several days.

8. Spray the rock with a clear varnish to give it a protective finish.
