Fresh paint Stucco Cracks

Use high-quality paint to cover hairline cracks.

Stucco tends to have problems with cracking and fading. You can restore its appearance by filling the cracks and applying a fresh coat of paint. New paint also protects the stucco from the elements. The quality of the paint job depends on the quality of the paint. Cheap paint requires a new coat every year, but a good paint can last between five and seven years. Preparation and paint application technique also determine the quality of the end result.

Instructions

1. Mix 1/3 cup of powder laundry detergent and 1 gallon of hot water in a bucket. If you have any mildew on the stucco, also add 1 quart of bleach.

2. Dip a coarse nylon brush into the detergent solution and scrub the surface you want to paint. This removes the chipped and peeling paint, revealing any cracks that need attention.

3. Insert your fingernail into the cracks you notice. If the crack can't accommodate your fingernail, leave it alone because high-quality paint can effectively fill it.

4. Fill a clean bucket with water and place it near your working area.

5. Apply a high-quality, exterior-grade, acrylic latex caulk on larger cracks.

6. Dip a sponge in the bucket of water and squeeze it to remove excess water. Wipe away excess caulk in all directions.

7. Hold fine texturing sand in your palm, in front of the wet caulk. Blow the sand to scatter it onto the wet caulk to make the patched area blend into the surrounding stucco. Let the caulk dry.

8. Pour paint into a paint tray and dip a roller with a deep nap about 3/4 to 1 inch long into the paint. Remove excess paint from the roller and apply the paint onto the stucco. Wait for the paint to dry and apply a second coat of paint to conceal the smaller cracks.
