Choose a paint color for your room that reflects your personal taste.
Choosing the right paint color for a room can be a tricky process. You want to make sure you pick the right color the first time to avoid repainting in a few months or years. Paint colors can help set room's mood, and can make a room look bigger or smaller. Rooms can have just one paint color, or multiple paint colors. The color you eventually choose should reflect your style and personality.
Match Other Colors
The paint color you choose should complement the room's permanent features, such as fireplaces or kitchen cabinets. If you have a fireplace with red hues, choose a paint color that will work with this. Hold up color swatches next to the permanent features to see what colors you like that would complement the other colors in the room. Try to pick paint colors that work well with the colors in other rooms of the house, especially if you have an open-plan space. If you're planning on painting an accent wall, choose a darker color in the same family as the main paint color or it could look odd.
Test Before Painting
Painting small areas of the room with your shortlisted paint colors can help you decide which one will work best. Trial-size cans of paint are available at most home improvement stores. Try to paint the colors close to each other on the test wall without touching. The test wall should get plenty of natural light so you can see how the colors appear in daylight. Also take note of how the colors look at night. A color that looks good in daylight might appear too dark when the sun goes down.
Create a Mood
Before choosing a paint color, think about the type of ambiance you'd like the room to give off. For a calming feel in a bathroom or bedroom, consider neutral colors such as taupe or cream, or soothing colors such as baby blue. Warmer or deeper colors such as terracotta, vintage-style gray-green or dark pink create a sociable atmosphere perfect for dining rooms. Brighter colors such as yellow can make a dark room seem lighter. A long, narrow room can seem wider if you paint the shorter walls in a darker color and the longer walls in a lighter color. A big room can give off an intimate feel if painted in colors that advance toward you, such as gold, orange, brown and red. Make a small room appear larger by painting the walls in receding colors, such as green, violet or blue.
