Family Room Fresh paint Ideas

Bold Living Room

The color scheme of your living room helps define your home and even your personality. This is the place you go to unwind and relax after your day and it should be a welcomed sanctuary. Use paint to inexpensively transform your space into a country retreat or a modern hang out. Paint can update your home and express your design style.

Choosing Paint Colors

Choose a paint color to match existing furniture or the largest design element in the room such as a stone fireplace. This creates a cohesive space without having to undertake a large remodel. Look closely at brick or tile and pull out the neutral or lighter colors for a surprising color palette. You can also base your color palette around your favorite time of year. An autumn living room can still be light and airy with taupe walls and terra cotta accents.

Paint color can affect the mood of your room. Light colors can make a small living room seem bigger whereas darker colors make a room feel intimate and cozy. Consider how much natural light you get in the living room so bold colors don't overwhelm the space.

Finishes

Faux finishes add dimension and interest to the walls. The secret to most faux finishes is to use several different tones of the same color for depth. Combing several lays of paint creates a linen effect for a light and airy room. If you want a rich study try creating a leather faux finish with paint. Faux plaster walls give a Tuscan air while adding dimension. Use faux finishes on existing wood furniture or the fireplace mantle to replicate antique or marble furniture. This gives a home character and a sense of history.

Paint Uses

Use paints to makeover almost any item in your living room. Give life to old wicker furniture with spray paint. A tropical theme would use wicker furniture in brown or deep red to simulate wood. Black paint gives furniture a modern look. Spray the wicker white, cream or sage if you want a country, cottage or shabby chic space. For an eclectic room choose bright yellow or pink so it really pops. Update the rest of your space by painting the fireplace mantle, bookshelves and floors.

Fabric paint can bring new life to an old lampshade while ceramic paint will brighten up the lamp base. You can even stencil your monogram on a throw pillow for a custom accessory.
