Use Latex Fresh paint For Indoor Trim

You can identify painter's tape by its blue color.

When it comes to painting indoor trim, latex paint is the preferred type of coating. Before you slap a coat of latex onto the interior trim in your home, however, you should know that certain types of latex paint are more suited for indoor trim than others. Choose the appropriate sheen of latex paint, or you may end up with excessive wear or stains. In addition, condition your trim before you apply the latex coating or the finish will fail relatively soon after application.

Instructions

1. Abrade painted trim to promote adhesion by sanding it with 120- to 220-grit sandpaper. Do not over-sand. Stop sanding the trim when it feels slightly rough. Skip this step if the interior trim is unpainted.

2. Protect the floor beneath the trim with fabric dropcloths. Cover the wall and other areas adjacent to the trim with a low-tack painter's tape.

3. Coat raw, unpainted trim with a latex primer, using a 2- to 3-inch paintbrush, manufactured for applying water-based paints. Skip this step if the trim was previously painted. Wait two hours for the primed trim to dry.

4. Wash the brush with water.

5. Coat the primed interior trim with a semi-gloss or gloss latex paint, using the clean 2- to 3-inch paintbrush. Wait two hours for the painted trim to dry. Add another coat if the primer shows through.
