Match Oil & Acrylic Colors

Visually, the only difference between oil and acrylic paint during the painting process is the amount of time each medium takes to dry. Oil paint dries over a long time. When the artist is painting with oils, the colors tend to become smudged and blended whether the artist wanted that or not. Acrylic paint dries so quickly that blending and smudging may become difficult. Acrylic paints are sometimes brighter and more pure, while oil paints might appear to be more murky or muddy. If you are replicating an oil painting with acrylic paints or vice-versa, you may find it difficult to match the colors only because the mediums cannot be controlled in the same way.

Instructions

1. Take the painting (or a photocopy) to an art supply store and compare the painting to the colors available. Identify and purchase the colors used in the painting you'll be trying to match. If you are not familiar with the shades of oil and acrylic paint, ask for assistance.

2. Lay out your design on the canvas with a pencil, and note which colors will be used in what areas. Set up your painting as you would a paint-by-number, with careful observations and notations of the entire piece on the canvas. Note areas where blending of two or more shades will occur.

3. Paint flat areas of color on the canvas by painting slowly and deliberately, staying within the lines of the design you laid out on the canvas.

4. Look for differences in hue by flicking your eyes back and forth between the colors you are trying to match and the colors you have painted.

5. Make changes as necessary.
