Strategies For Painting Another Coat

A second coat of paint should be applied in the same manner as the first.

The second coat of paint is as important as the first. After all, it's the last coat of paint, making it the coat that everyone will see. Approaching the second coat with careful patience will ensure a successful, professional-looking appearance.

Patience Makes Perfect

Although you might be tempted to rush through your paint job, the experts at Bob Vila recommend waiting at least four hours between coats of latex paint. Allow more time if you live in a high-humidity area or applied especially thick coats of paint. If you used an oil-based paint, allow 24 hours for drying. Painting over still-wet or damp walls often causes a cracking effect that requires sanding, repriming and repainting.

Protect Your Gear

Organize your tools so they'll be ready for use once the first coat is dry. Good Housekeeping advises covering your paint tray, brush and roller with a cellophane wrap that touches the paint and then placing all covered materials in the refrigerator.

On Application

The second coat of paint goes on the same way as the first. Use a small, angled foam or bristled brush on areas surrounding windows, doors, the ceiling and baseboards. Use a roller on larger expanses. Sweeping "W" or "M" shapes or diagonal strokes are good for an even appearance and distribution. Even these out with up and down strokes, too.
