Painting Strategies To Hide Defects In Drywall

Use paint to hide those unsightly drywall flaws.

Although you likely want smooth, flat drywall in your house, most homes -- especially older ones -- will have damaged and sometimes cracked interior walls. Lightly sanding and using a drywall compound can help fill these imperfections, but often homeowners want to hide flaws in well-worn walls by using paint. Following some specific procedures will help eliminate visual defects.

Textured Paint

Textured paint will greatly reduce the look of flaws because it is much thicker than flat paint. This type of paint contains additives such as sand and small granular material to produce a rougher surface. Applying this material greatly reduces imperfections in the drywall by filling small dents and reducing shadows.

Paint with Patterns

Applying paint patterns to drywall, such as using a sponging technique, will help create the illusion of a flat wall. Dip the sponge into the paint, then use a blotting motion to apply paint to wall. Start with small areas measuring approximately 2 by 2 feet to help keep the pattern uniform. You can also use a solid color base coat and a contrasting color for your sponging; this overlapping of colors will create a textured look.

Flat Paint

Painting with a flat paint eliminates reflections unlike using glossier paints, which have a high reflection rate. Remember, the higher the gloss, the more visible the defects will become. Most name brand paints have a better cover rate. They may cost a little more but in the long run will save you time.

Darker Color Paint

Use a darker color paint to create a softer, subtler appearance on the wall. Always keep in mind that the darker the color, the less reflection from light will occur. Although darker paints will make the room look smaller, they provide an inexpensive way to help reduce the appearance of flaws.

Use a Thicker Roller

Paint with a thicker napped roller, which will give a rougher appearance to the paint and allow you to apply more paint to the wall. You can buy smooth, semi-smooth, medium, thick or extra thick rollers, as well as those that apply patterns and textures.
