Fresh paint Fake Rock

Give any object stone designs.

Fake rocks or rock face can be made from a number of materials ranging from polystyrene to plaster to papier mache, but however it's made, a key factor in making it look realistic is the finishing paint job. One of the most effective ways to create a realistic-looking rock face with minimal time and special painting skills is to do a two-toned marble paint effect. Use this technique for anything from home décor to house painting to special theatrical effects.

Instructions

1. Lay down a base layer of earth tone color, such as a shade of brown, gray, or beige. Let the paint dry fully and apply a second coat as needed.

2. Mix a second, lighter shade of paint. Combine one part white paint with four parts of the color you just used for the first coat. Stir them until the colors are fully combined with no marbling or inconsistencies.

3. Pour the light paint into a painting tray. Fill the tray to a shallow point of about a quarter inch of paint or less for best results.

4. Add a second layer of the light paint using a sponge. Dip the sponge lightly into the paint in the tray (try not to coat the entire surface of the sponge), then use it to gently blot spots of lighter paint over the darker paint of the first layer. Work to create a speckled effect with much of the darker paint still showing through. To achieve the speckled look, you may have to adjust the amount of paint on your sponge.

5. Give the second layer of paint a "veined" effect. While the paint is still wet, drag a feather through spotty layer of light paint. Move the feather in a random, swirling pattern, making both small and large swirls over the entire painted surface.

6. Spray the painted surface with a polyurethane finishing spray (or similar gloss) to give it the appropriate shine. Add a second coat as needed (especially if you're painting on a porous material).
