Paint your home theater to resemble a commerical movie theater or create your own design.
The big-screen TV or projector is ready to go and the comfortable seats are in place in your home theater, but don't settle in just yet. Your home theater is not ready for viewers until the walls are ready for their close-up.
Classic Ideas
Paint walls basic black to direct the focus in the room to the screen. A couple of coats of glossy black paint will remove any colorful distractions.
If adding interest to the room is more to your liking, adopt an old-fashioned design by filling the walls, and maybe even the ceiling, with murals based upon classical designs. When grand movie theaters had only one screen, images inspired by Green and Roman art were sometimes added to entertain movie-goers.
Nature
Follow the example of the Regency Lido Theater in Newport Beach, California and decorate your home theater walls with paintings of ocean waves. The waves are lit with black lights, which makes them appear to glow in the dark.
If your home is in a wooded area, give your guests the illusion they are watching a film outside by painting the walls with trees and leaves. Add blinking stars with white paint or add small, twinkling light bulbs.
Architecture
Base your painting design on an architectural style. If you are live in a home with Italian-inspired architecture, equip your home theater with wood columns and paints in the warm, muted colors associated with Tuscany.
Movie Themes
Match the paint in your home theater with the theme of your favorite film genre. If you are a big fan of science fiction epics, style your room to look like the bridge of a starship. "Home Theater Design Magazine" suggests a design with gray walls reminiscent of a bulkhead accented with small lights that evoke the art deco spaceships of years past.
Fill the walls with murals depicting scenes from your favorite movies. If your home theater will be used by the family, paint happy scenes of cartoon characters. If you are a big fan of gangster films, paint scenes from "The Godfather," "Goodfellas," or other classics.
