Decorate Inside A Model Home Look

Add sophisticated color to stark white walls.

If you fell in love with a model home, but found the reality of your new home is something very different, don't despair. Model homes are decorated and staged with buyers, not families, in mind. However, you can capture a bit of that model home magic for yourself in your new home.

Instructions

1. Look at the bright side if the walls of your new home are stark white. This is like a blank canvas to a painter. For inspiration, visit the model homes in your community. Notice how the model homes have been painted. If a model home has a predominant blue color, you will see that color is carried through the house as a trim, accent or main color. Create an accent wall in a rich color or use a Venetian plaster or rag-rolling technique for texture

2. Add window treatments. For privacy, choose from plantation shutters, wooden or aluminum blinds or shades. Then accent the window with draperies hung on beautiful designer rods. Notice that in model homes designers flank a window with drapes. They are not meant for privacy and cannot be drawn closed. Choose drapery fabric to complement the wall colors and your furniture fabrics and accessories; you do not need to match all the fabrics for your bedding, accessories and windows.

3. Measure rooms before buying big-ticket items such as sofas and beds. A king bed will not work in a small bedroom that is meant for a twin or double bed. Notice that in model homes twin beds are often staged as daybeds to create the illusion of space and multifunction. Rather than a headboard, extravagant bedding and piles of pillows create the feeling of luxury, without absorbing space. Diagram where you want to place your furniture. For the living room or family room, create conversational grouping around a fireplace or design viewing areas for the TV.

4. Add area rugs to define areas in the home, especially in open concept designs. Choose patterns or rugs in the same color hues used on the walls and fabrics. Select rugs that tie the color and style elements in the room together.

5. Add art pieces such as a painting or sculptures to enhance the look of your rooms. Keep it simple by grouping paintings in pairs and accessories in clusters of threes. Choose pieces that can make an impact without being overdone. Make sure that your accessories also pick the colors of your room for a more cohesive look.

6. Replace the new home odor of fresh paint with potpourri or scented candles help you and your guests relax and enjoy your new home.
