Decorating & Painting Colors of a Victorian Home
The American Victorian era of the late 1800s and early 1900s ushered in a new wave of interesting paint and decor colors. Both the interiors and exteriors of the large, sprawling houses popular at that time featured an array of exciting colors.
External Colors
Light pastel colors dominated the exterior of many Victorian era homes. Lavenders, yellows, pinks and light blues could be found on every block, and were often paired together in twos or threes, giving the exterior the look of a dollhouse. White houses were also present, although less common, and oftentimes featured dark wood trim.
Floors and Walls
Victorian-era interior colors were vastly different from exterior colors. Walls often featured prominent wood and plaster moulding, with plain white walls. Intricately patterned wallpapers in colors like gold and tan were also popular. Most Victorian homes had little or no carpeting. Hardwood floors were common, and large oriental rugs in deep, rich tones were used in lieu of permanent carpeting because they were easier to clean.
Furniture and Accessories
Furniture and accessories within Victorian-era homes varied, but tended to keep in line with the interior wall colors. Deep reds, green and blues were common, as were plush, luxurious materials like velvet and fur. Gold, silver and brass tones graced figurines and other small decorative items.
