Kitchen Painting Ideas With Yellow

Buttery yellow paint helps amplify sunlight.

Since the kitchen tends to be one of the most heavily trafficked rooms in a house, make it a mood-lifting space with a cheery yellow paint job. According to "Decorating with Yellow," an article on the Country Living website, a saffron-colored room is "radiant and invigorating." Options for yellow shades range from pale creamy lemon to rich yellow-orange.

Polka Dots

Candy shapes are a sweet alternative to plain round dots.

Apply a base coat or two of bright, almost electric yellow paint, the color of Italian limoncello. Freckle the kitchen walls with white polka dots using craft sponges cut into circles. Customize this look by selecting the size and placement of the dots. For example, walls covered in very small dots arranged in tidy offset rows will suggest a prim 1950s-era polka-dotted skirt, while extra-large dots scattered haphazardly on the backsplash will conjure a playful, childlike feeling. For an optional accent, outline each dot with black paint. "Decorating with Yellow" further states that black and white furnishings or accents in a yellow room add a bold, graphic feel.

Silhouettes

Line outlines are a subtle alternative to solid silhouettes.

Consider adorning the kitchen with yellow silhouettes. These can be as simple as a border of stenciled basic shapes, like stars or hearts, or as complex as a life-size scene depicting a bespectacled grandmother stirring a bowl of cookie dough while children play with a rowdy dog behind her. (If your ambition is greater than your artistic talent, hire a professional muralist to paint the silhouettes--or get a skilled artist to sketch the outlines for you to fill in.) For a small, silly touch, paint a silhouetted family of ducks--mother in front, fuzzy round ducklings in a row behind--waddling along the floor.

Beach Umbrella Stripes

If painting the ceiling with umbrella-style stripes, have them emanate from a central point.

Paint the kitchen with yellow and white stripes of equal thickness, mimicking an old-fashioned beach umbrella. Such a design is particularly suitable for kitchens with low ceilings, because vertical stripes make rooms seem taller. Enhance the vintage associations of striped walls by using eggshell white and a pale, slightly mustard-toned yellow, suggesting a time-faded photograph.
