If your home is brick and the garage isn't made of brick, choosing the appropriate color can be tricky.
Since your garage is a part of your property, when you choose an exterior paint color, you affect the presentation and value of your home. The color that you choose for your garage is as important as the color you choose for the rest of your house. In fact, to be attractive your house and garage need to match, which means that whatever color you choose for your garage needs to be related to the color of your home.
Attached Garage
Assuming your garage is attached to your home, the most popular choice by far is to paint the garage the same color as the rest of the house. To do anything else would be to call attention to the garage as if it were the structure's focal point. In addition, a differently colored garage could make your house look somehow smaller or more narrow than it really is. By painting your garage the same color as the house -- whatever that color may be -- you make your house look larger and unified.
Recessed Garage
In the case of a garage that is set away from the house (usually into the backyard), you can still paint your garage the same color as your house to reinforce the fact that your garage and home are a matching set. If you don't want to go this route, you can paint your garage a color that is not the same color as your house. Since a garage is usually not an attractive or interesting building, you'll want to draw attention away from the garage and put the focus back on your house. In this case, paint your garage a color that will allow your garage to blend with its surroundings. If you're wondering what colors can hide a garage in plain sight, a soft woody green or muted brown will match the color of most backyards.
Brick Home, Non-Brick Garage
If your home is brick, a matching brick garage works well. Unfortunately, you may not have a choice in the matter. If you bought your brick house with an unattached garage made of a different material than the house, you have a tough decision to make. If your garage is set away from the road and surrounded by a natural environment (your backyard), you can try to camouflage your garage as you would with any other recessed, unattached garage. You can also match the garage to the trim on the house. Normally this is a no-no, but if you're trying to match your garage to your house, this may be an acceptable choice.
The Door
Avoid painting the garage door the same color as the trim on the house. Also, don't paint the garage door white unless the rest of the house is white. Try not to paint the garage door any color that is bright, loud, obvious or a dramatically different color than the rest of the house. By painting the garage the same color as the rest of the house, you create the illusion that house is larger than it really is.
