You are ready to paint a room, but you have never painted one before. By understanding some basic steps you can prepare a room to in order to paint it. Grasping painting professionals methods will be help anyone to learn to paint a room efficiently and keep painting tools clean. Learning these techniques will allow you to venture forth and paint more rooms in the future to decorate or update your living space.

Instructions

1. Tape the corners and seams of your room with your painter's tape. Tape the ceiling seam on your wall where the ceiling and your wall meet separately. Tape your floorboards with your painter's tape.

2. Lay down your painter's plastic, old bed sheet, tarp or moving blanket on your floor to protect your floor. You can tape your painter's plastic to your floorboards to protect them.

3. Pour your paint into your paint tray. Start off with painting your larger areas first. Attach your extension pole if you are going to use one. Place your roller cover over your paint roller. Roll your paint roller into the tray. Roll the excess paint off on the ridged part of the tray. Too much paint on your roller will cause you to splatter paint.

4. Roll your roller brush along your wall until you reach roughly 1 inch under your painter's tape. It is okay to paint over your painter's tape a bit, but not too much. Painter's tape should not let your paint through, but if there is a bubble in your tape, you can get paint onto a part of your ceiling or wall you do not want painted.

5. Paint over the end line of your paint roller each time to cover any seams that your paint leaves behind.

6. Add more paint to your roller when you notice that there is almost no paint on the wall when you roll your roller. Dip it into your paint tray and roll off the excess each time you need to replenish your paint. If you notice that you are running out of paint in your tray, pour more paint.

7. Finish off your wall with your roller until you are ready to use a paint brush.

8. Rinse your roller off immediately when you are finished with your roller. Run it under lukewarm water and squeeze the paint out until the roller cover runs clear with water and your roller cover is devoid of all paint. Cleaning off your roller will allow you to use it in the future. If you need to use your roller for the same project with a different color, this will allow your roller to dry before you use it again. Let your paint dry a bit before pulling off the tape on your seams and ceiling to paint with your paint brush.

9. Replenish your paint in your paint tray if you are low on paint before you paint with your paint brush.

10. Dip your paint brush half way up the bristles to finish painting your wall.

11. Cut-in along your seams. "Cutting-in is to finish up the last of your painting by painting along your seams with your paint brush. Be careful about cutting-in. Cut-in slowly so you do not get paint on a wall or your ceiling that is not meant to be painted," according to Jeremy Parcels at RJM Contractors, Inc. of Bradenton, Florida.

12. Rinse your brush under lukewarm water when you are finished painting with it. Angle your brush with the bristles down. Fan out your bristles gently to remove paint on the inside of your brush. Rinse your brush until your brush runs clear.

13. Rinse out your paint tray and liner to use for a future project. Wipe your paint tray liner to remove excess water. Wipe your paint tray down to prevent rust.

14. Let your newly painted wall dry before removing the last of your painter's tape from your ceiling and floor boards. Once your paint is mostly dry remove your painter's tape gently to prevent pulling at your paint. Another option is to take a box cutter or utility knife and run it along the seam gently as you pull your tape off allowing your tape to follow a cut line. Clean up your workspace as you let your wall dry.
