Old paneling provides a somber atmosphere in a mobile home.
As a mobile home ages, its wood paneling may fade and lose its luster, providing a somber environment for anyone occupying the home. It usually isn't practical to replace wood panels in an old mobile home, but you can brighten the interior by giving the panels a coat of paint. Painting paneling isn't much different from painting drywall, but you must de-gloss the surface first if you want the paint to stick. Failing to do this will result in paint that scratches off easily or may even lift off on its own.
Instructions
1. Cover the floors with a drop cloth and furnishings with plastic.
2. Mix detergent with warm water in a bucket and thoroughly clean the paneling with a sponge. When you are done, pour out the soapy water, fill the bucket with warm, clean water and sponge off the soapy residue. Let the paneling dry.
3. Pound in any nails that are sticking out and sink the heads with a nail punch. Fill all the nail holes with wood filler and let the filler dry. The nail holes may not be obvious on dark paneling, but they will be visible after it has been painted.
4. Sand the wood filler with 150-grit sandpaper, then rub down the entire surface of the paneling with fine steel wool to de-gloss it.
5. Apply a coat of oil-based primer. Paint the edges and corners with a paintbrush, then use a roller to paint the rest of the surface. The primer will adhere better to the paneling than will paint, and it will provide a better substrate for the top-coat than the paneling itself.
6. Cover the paneling with one coat of paint in the same way, cutting in the edges with a paintbrush and rolling paint on the rest of the surface. Let the paint dry, then apply a second coat.
