New Methods To Fresh paint Your Living Space Black & Whitened

Show off some black and white pottery in a painted recessed alcove.

A black and white color scheme brings both visual drama and classic elegance to a room. While it's becoming more common to see walls painted black, your decorating efforts are not limited to only the walls. As you plan the painting motif for a room, think about new ways in which you might incorporate the black and white paint scheme throughout the room. The results will tie the visual motif on the walls to the rest of the room.

Chalkboard

Kids have been known to express their artistic tendencies on the walls of their rooms. A bit of black chalkboard paint makes this creative act OK. Choose a wall in the child's room that you'll dedicate to this project. If the room has solid closet doors without slats, this offers a good choice; it doesn't take up very much wall space, and you can take the doors down at a later time if you want to repaint them another color. Paint the area with the black chalkboard paint and then screw a container on the wall nearby to hold pieces of chalk.

Black and White Floors

If your apartment or house has bare floors that you want to dress up a bit, paint them with black and white patterns. One way to choose a pattern for this project is to look at some of the other decorative elements you already have in the room. For example, if you purchased some black throw pillows with a white fleur-de-lis pattern on them, add this pattern on a larger scale to the floor. Reverse the colors to make the pattern more noticeable, making the floor white and the fleur-de-lis black. This idea will work with a number of different patterns, allowing you to adjust the black and white paint scheme on the floor so that it fits your decorating style.

Accent Walls

Accent walls allow you to highlight one wall in the room, creating a room focal point. The easiest way to incorporate this idea is to paint one wall in the room one color and the adjoining walls a contrasting color. In this case, paint the accent wall with a semi-gloss black paint. Add white paint to the walls surrounding the accent wall. Hang up black and white pictures on the accent wall; choose white picture frames to make them stand out.

Built-In Features

Some homes come with built-in architectural features such as a bookcase or alcove. Painting the recessed areas of these features black and the walls around them white provides you with a place to show off fine art items. Paint these recessed areas and then show off a black and white pottery collection, some framed artwork drawn in charcoal or some black and white modern art sculpture pieces.
