Determining the right amount of paint for a room can be a breeze, if you follow a few easy steps.
Applying a fresh coat of paint to your walls can give a room an instant and inexpensive fresh look. Whether your wall color is outdated, in need of repair or just ready for a whole new look, a fresh coat of paint can do wonders. However, determining just how much paint is needed is important if you do not want to end up buying more or less paint than is needed to complete the job. Determining the right amount of paint can be accomplished by following a few basic steps.
Instructions
1. Decide which walls will be painted.
2. Measure the length of all the walls that are to be painted, adding all the lengths together for a grand total length measurement.
3. Measure the height of the walls where paint is to be applied.
4. Multiply that height by the total length. This will give you the total square footage of the area to be painted.
5. Subtract from the total square footage, the areas that will not be painted. For every average size window, subtract 15 square feet, and for every door, subtract 20 square feet from the total square footage. You will end up with a number fairly close to the actual wall surface area that is to be painted.
6. Determine how many gallons of paint are needed, by dividing the final total found in the previous step by 350 (which is the average square footage of coverage from one gallon of paint). Round the total, if necessary. If the number is less than 0.5, consider buying an extra quart or two. If the number is more than 0.5, consider buying one extra gallon.
