Dining room area rug
A tiled apartment can feel cold, institutional and uninviting. Although convenient for clean up and long-wearing, tiled apartments require a little extra effort to make the space unique and welcoming. A good way to do this is to break up and define the spaces and add needed warmth by using warm tones in area rugs, furniture and accessories. Here's get started.
Instructions
1. Use a warm-toned area rug in your living room and dining room to define the space and warm up the cold tile floor. Even a warm tile color like terra cotta feels cold in living spaces like your bedroom, dining and living room, and a coordinating color rug will make you more comfortable.
2. Go "green" by adding some large living plants to corners and a foyer area. Layer the plants by placing a large, standing floor plant behind medium- and smaller-sized potted plants. You don't have to worry about spills because your plants will have drip trays and are seated directly on the tile. The green foliage and organic silhouettes will help soften the geometric tile pattern.
3. Soften the light that lands on your tile by adding gauzy curtains and up-lights. Buy white, cream or yellow curtains that provide privacy but lets lots of color-warmed light into your living space. The warm-toned sunlight, filtered through your curtains, will help soften the cool feeling of your tile and make the room feel more inviting. Up-lights in corners provide indirect brightness that will bring the eye up and away from tile flooring.
4. Create an accent wall. Painting a warm color on one wall of your living space warms up the room in another way. Coordinate with the tile by painting a hue of the same color family as your flooring. For example, if your tile has green tones in it, paint one wall sage green to bring the eye up and away from the floor.
5. Choose a warmer tone of your tile color for furniture and accessories. For example, if your tiles are terra cotta and you bought a red and brown area rug, top it off with cherry wood side tables and a brown leather couch. Add splashes of color with throw pillows in a bright yellow, dark blue or pink and select a few accessory items to match, such as a book with a warm-toned cover or a red glass vase.
