Integrate elements of the sea to make your home a beach-inspired oasis.
If you enjoy spending time at the beach, why not take the beach with you when you leave. You do not have to live at the beach to enjoy a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Surround yourself with beach-inspired design and each time you enter your home, you will feel transported to your favorite seashore location. By integrating beach-themed color schemes, natural elements and accents, you can transform your home into an oasis of peace and calm.
Architecture
Determine the type of beach home you want, such as a beach shack design or something more contemporary. This provides a template for all other design decisions you make. Accentuate windows with wooden frames and beams. You can also affix vertical or horizontal clapboard or bead board paneling to the walls.
Paint
Either color your walls a clean and crisp shade of white or select a beach-inspired color such as coral, light green or pale blue. Add a touch of brown with a light shade of blue to add a touch of nature to the coastal atmosphere.
Furniture
Natural furniture styles provide an earthy element to your beach home. If you want a casual look, go with wicker furniture, which is lightweight. On your patio and porch, add Adirondack chairs for relaxing and lounging. Painted wood provides another option for your beach-inspired home. Paint the furniture white or use a pine finish of wood.
Flooring
Most beach homes have natural wooden floors. This is due to the constant influx of sand and moisture. To stay true to your beach motif, select a wooden floor in pine and accent with area rugs in textured styles. Choose colors that complement the color scheme of the home.
Window Treatments
Do not add anything too elaborate to the windows. Either add some wooden blinds and a clean color such as white or install roman or roll-down shades in a natural tone. If you would prefer to hang curtains, select a sheer and light fabric.
Accents
Add scented candles in coastal-inspired fragrances such as coconut, ocean mist or sea breeze. Choose candles of varying size and distribute them throughout your home. One option is to place the candles in a bowl of seashells. Put sand or pebbles into glass containers and place them throughout the home. Fill vases with grass or bamboo, which introduces elements of the natural plant life of a coastal destination to your home.
