Do-it-yourself Faux Painting Of Interior Walls

Mimic the look of linen with faux painting.

Faux painting or finishing enables you to create paint designs and textures that mimic other items or styles while saving you the cost or effort of using the actual item on the walls. Within the faux painting family are many options such as antiquing, leather, woodgrain, crinkle, crackle and more. Strie, or dragging, painting creates the appearance of linen or fabric on the walls. The soft textured look works well with a variety of colors and can be used in practically any room of the house.

Instructions

1. Mix one part paint with two parts water and one part glaze using a manual paint mixer or ruler. For example, 1 quart of paint, plus two quarts of water and 1 quart of glaze. The amount of total solution you will need to paint the surface will depend on the size of the area and you should consult the instructions on the paint for the best estimate. Because a lot of the solution will be wiped off the wall, start with the recommended amount of paint or glaze to cover the whole area you will be faux painting. When mixing the paint solution, only mix enough to do one section of wall at a time.

2. Apply the mixture to the surface using a damp sponge.

3. Use pressure and drag a dry brush over the surface horizontally immediately following application of the solution.

4. Continue with the sponge and brush until you have covered the surface. Overlap each drag stroke and use a dry towel to clean your brush as needed.

5. Allow the wall to dry completely per manufacturer's guidelines on the paint and/or glaze, which ever is longest.

6. Repeat the process with vertical stokes to create an intersecting strie faux painting finish.
