Never paint over new bare wood, or the paint will peel.
Bare wood will not accept paint unless it is properly conditioned prior to application. Although not as ill-suited for adhesion as plastic, metal and vinyl surfaces, unfinished wooden surfaces will shed their painted finished unless they are coated with the appropriate type of bonding primer. If the bare wood is new, it may also contain large amounts of moisture that can inhibit adhesion. Before you attempt to paint new wood, you must employ the proper preparation techniques, or you will generate a finish that will eventually fail.
Instructions
1. Wait four to six weeks for new wood to dehydrate.
2. Rinse new exterior wood using a pressure washer. Wait one to two hours for the wood to dry. Wipe down new interior wood with a tack cloth.
3. Coat the clean wood with a base coat of primer. Use a latex primer on interior wood. Use an acrylic latex primer on exterior wood. Apply using a paintbrush manufactured for use with water-based acrylic and latex paints. Wait two hours for the primed wood to dry.
4. Wash the brush with water and place on clean towels to dry.
5. Coat the primed wood with paint using a roller or the cleaned and dried paintbrush. Use a latex paint on interior wood. Use an acrylic latex paint on exterior wood. Wait two hours for the painted wood to dry.
