Fresh paint Stucco Houses

A weathered stucco home shows off aged paint and texture.

An attractive alternative to cement, stucco is a material made of an aggregate -- such as sand, gravel, or stone -- water and a binder that hardens the components. Applied wet, stucco dries to a solid that you can paint. Before painting stucco, remember that the surface must be extremely clean and primed in order for the paint to remain durable.

Instructions

1. Attach a wide spray tip onto the hose nozzle of the power washer. Spray the house with the power washer at minimal pressure, about 1200 to 1500 psi. Wash the entire area you wish to paint. Remove all dust, debris and oil.

2. Prime with an acrylic masonry primer. Apply one or two coats, depending on how rich and smooth you want the paint to look.

3. Select your paint. Choose a type that allows the stucco to breathe, such as masonry paint or elastomeric paint.

4. Load a paint roller with a lambswool cover and use it to paint large areas. Use a 1-inch or 1 1/4-inch roller for smooth stucco. Use a 1 1/2-inch roller for rougher textures.

5. Apply a continuous coat of paint on the stucco. Unlike cement, aluminum siding or wood, stucco requires an extremely even painting job. Avoid leaving any small unpainted areas or bubbles in the paint. Use brushes or sponges for detailed work.
