Removing paint from brick can be a difficult and time-consuming task depending on the age of the paint and the amount that needs to be removed. If the painted brick covers a large area, it is best to hire a professional to sand blast the paint from the brick. If the painted area is small or the result of drips from painting another surface, the safest way to remove the paint from brick is to use a commercial gel or paste paint remover.
Instructions
1. Wipe the area to be treated with a clean, damp rag to remove dust and other particles. Allow the area to dry completely.
2. Apply the gel or paste to the paint with a paintbrush, using a thick layer. For paint applied prior to 1970, place strips of fabric over the top of the gel and press them lightly into the gel. Refer to the gel or paste manufacturer's instructions for how long to allow the gel to sit.
3. Use a scraper to remove the gel from the brick. If you placed fabric strips on the gel, peel the fabric from the brick to remove the paint, then scrape away any remaining paint.
4. Pour 1/4 cup dish-washing liquid into a quart-size spray bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with hot water.
5. Spray the treated area of the brick with the cleaning solution and scrub the area with a medium-bristle brush.
6. Rinse the treated area thoroughly with cool water.
