Unique Interior Decor Ideas

Use home decor to express your individuality.

Having an attractive, conventional home is fine, but sometimes it's nice to stand out from the pack. Whether you want the inside of your house to have a radically unusual look or you just want to add a few novel touches as conversation pieces, don't be afraid to express your own individuality with the layout of your home.

Repurposed Nightstand

Anything with a small area and flat surface can serve as a coffee table, end table and nightstand. Use a repurposed industrial or antique item as a small table to give your home a unique decorative touch. Designer Clodagh, author of "Total Design," showcases a nightstand made from a 19th century sugar press from Spanish Colonial Philippines on the HGTV website. If you don't have access to artifacts from two centuries ago, use a wine barrel cut to the appropriate height or an oil drum for a more modern look. Keep an eye out for unusual objects with flat tops. You never known when you'll find the perfect unique table for your house.

Modern Look

Play up an unusual space with slanting walls or exposed features for a one-of-a-kind modern room. Paint exposed beams in strong, basic colors like black, white or red. Install mirrors, chrome cabinets and fixtures, and slick black desks and tables. Decorate the floor with richly patterned tile featuring black, white and possibly red to play up the intensity and distinctiveness of the room. Add a peace lily, fern or other green, or green and white indoor plant as a centerpiece to contrast with the architectural forcefulness of the room.

Cob Building

Redo a room in cob to give your house a truly unique look. Cob is an easy material to work with and is made of sand, straw, clay and water. It can be worked into nearly any shape, is inexpensive, ecologically friendly, durable and easy to work with. Build custom benches with organic shapes into your rooms. Fashion subtly curved shelves with hidden built-ins. Carve subtle designs or work subtle curves into the walls to give your room a soft, natural shape in stark contrast to the harsh, rectangular geometry of your other rooms.
