Create An Exterior Picture Of My House

Angled pictures are more visually pleasing than straight pictures.

There are many reasons for wanting a quality exterior picture of your home. You may want to list your home for sale or document a home renovation project. Taking a picture the exterior of your home in it's best light takes a bit of practice, experimentation and planning. If you take the time to do each of these steps, you'll have the high quality exterior picture you need.

Instructions

1. Play with the settings on the camera. Many cameras have a landscape setting as one of the presets. Check your menu options for the word landscape or a small picture of mountains to locate this setting choice. Use this setting to take exterior pictures.

2. Inspect the land where your home sits. Shoot your home at an angle and from the highest point from which you can see the entire front facade of the home.

3. Take test pictures to inspect the lighting to narrow down when to take the final pictures. Take pictures from the same place in the early morning hours, midday, early evening and right before sunset. Typically, pictures shot just after sunrise and just prior to sundown are the best as the light is softer and more flattering. Eliminate extremely harsh or strong light as well as any lighting conditions that put the front of the home in deep or dark shadows.

4. Pay attention to the sky. Take the pictures of your home's exterior when the sky is blue, not overcast, cloudy, rainy or gray. Whether the sky is a soft blue or a brilliant blue, it makes your home appear more welcoming than an overcast or rainy sky.

5. Turn on all the interior lights and porch lights when taking your exterior photographs, especially when shooting early in the morning or in the evening. Turn your windows into warm and welcoming views to the home rather than black boxes they'll appear as without interior lights.

6. Take several shots of the home over about a 10- to 15-minute time frame, once you've determined what time and from what angle to shoot the house. The light changes drastically in that time frame unless you're shooting at midday, so taking multiple shots at various times allows you to capture the best exterior picture of your home instead of missing it by five minutes.
