Thin Acrylic Fresh paint With Water

Mix acrylic paint with water to thin the paint's consistency.

Thinning acrylic paint with water is necessary when using it for faux finishes, decorative purposes and signing artwork. Thinned out paint allows an artist to achieve fluid lines and a look of transparency that can not otherwise be achieved with straight acrylic paints. Different paint to water ratios are necessary for different purposes. Mixing the correct amount of paint and water is essential in achieving the effect you want.

Instructions

1. Thin the paint to make a glaze. A glaze is similar to a stain and is used in various faux finishes. To thin paint to the consistency of glaze, add one part acrylic paint to one part water. Mix the two in a large plastic container with a paint stir stick.

2. Mix acrylic paint with water to create a consistency suitable for stippling and fine detail. Mix three parts acrylic paint to one part water. Use a small yogurt container and a plastic spoon to combine the two. Ensure that the paint is not too runny by practising on a piece of cardboard before applying the thinned paint to your project.

3. Add water to acrylic paint to use when painting signatures. When a project is complete and you want to sign your work, using straight acrylic paint will not work. The consistency is too thick to be applied in a thin, fluid line. Mix two parts of acrylic paint to one part water. Dip a stylus or the end of a paintbrush into the mixture to paint your signature.
