From the pasture to the paint brush
Recipes for homemade non-toxic paint range from finger paints mixed with starch to household paint made with milk. Using food products to make paint for children is safe and economical, with easy cleanup. Follow a few simple steps to make your own milk paint that can be used on walls, furniture or other projects.
Instructions
1. Old brushes work well with milk paint.
Measure 1 oz. of hydrated lime into the mixing bucket. Remember to wear your mask.
2. Measure 1 qt. of skim milk. Begin slowly pouring over the hydrated lime to make a cream and then finish adding the milk. If your paint is too thin, add enough chalk to thicken.
3. Add enough powdered pigment to obtain the desired color. Mix well and store in a refrigerator until ready to use. Milk paint will spoil after three to four days.
4. Apply a coat to your wall or furniture project, and let dry completely before applying another coat. To obtain a darker color, you may wish to add a couple more coats.
