Compare Hvlp Sprayers

Carefully compare HVLP paint sprayers.

Unlike traditional airless paint sprayers, HVLP sprayers use a high volume of air at a low pressure to apply the material. The lower pressure results in less overspray, and more material adheres directly to the substrate, which saves both time and money. Wood finishers and painters use HVLP sprayers to finish coat furniture, wood railings, doors, trim and cabinets. HVLP sprayers apply stains, lacquers, enamels, latex paints and additional materials. While HVLP sprayers are fairly simple to use, consider important factors when comparing them.

Instructions

1. Purchase an HVLP sprayer that can handle the types of materials you plan on spraying. Choose from the three HVLP sprayer categories: thin, thicker and thickest. If you're spraying clear stains and sealers, purchase a sprayer in the thin category. Buy a sprayer in the thicker category if you're spraying thinned latex and oil-based paints. Thickest applies to unthinned latex and oil-based paints.

2. Consider the stage ratings of HVLP sprayers. Purchase a one or two stage sprayer if you're spraying mostly thin finishes, and buy a stage three turbine sprayer for compatibility with most stains, varnishes and water-based paints. Upgrade to a higher stage for frequent oil-based paint spraying.

3. Purchase an HVLP sprayer that includes a turbine, a spray gun and a hose if you don't currently have a compressor. The turbine generates the high volume and low pressure. If you already have a compressor, you only need to buy the spray conversion gun and a spray hose. You must use a 20-gallon compressor for the sprayer to operate properly.

4. Compare the atomization pressure for each spray gun. A minimum of 2 psi is necessary to successfully spray a finish.

5. Check the cup and the air cap if you're comparing used HVLP sprayers. The cup cannot have any rust or corrosion, and the air cap cannot have any clogged holes.
