Sand the interior of vinyl chest freezers to promote adhesion.
If you would like to paint the interior of a chest freezer, consider some critical points before you start. The inside of a chest freezer is composed of nonporous metal or vinyl. Each of these surfaces is ill-suited for adhesion and will reject new finishes unless they are properly prepared. Employ the appropriate preparation strategy based on the type of freezer you are working with. Select the right type of paint, or you may end up with a finish that won't stand up to frigid temperatures.
Instructions
1. Unplug the freezer and open the lid.
2. Wash the interior of the chest freezer with a trisodium phosphate cleanser, using a coarse sponge. Rinse the freezer with wet rags and dry it with towels.
3. Abrade the interior of the chest freezer to promote adhesion. Scour the interior until it feels slightly rough to the touch. Skip this step if the interior of the freezer is metal.
4. Cover portions of the chest freezer you do not want painted with masking paper and painter's tape.
5. Coat the interior of the chest freezer with acrylic spray primer. Use a galvanized metal etching spray primer on metallic freezers. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the freezer and the spray can nozzle as you apply. Leave the lid open. Wait three hours for the primer to dry.
6. Coat the interior of the chest freezer with appliance epoxy spray paint. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the freezer and the spray can nozzle as you apply. Leave the lid open. Wait six hours before plugging in the freezer.
