Plantation shutters are slatted shutters that are customized to fit a specific window or door frame. The shutters hang inside the window or glass door, and, like most shutters, can be opened to let light in through the slats, or closed completely to block out light or add privacy to your home. If you are in the market for plantation shutters, you have a wide selection from which to choose. You can compare plantation shutters for the windows or doors of your home by considering a few different factors.
Instructions
1. Look at pre-manufactured plantation shutters if you have a window or door in a standard size. Though you have fewer options in pre-made shutters than in custom plantation shutters, the pre-made shutters are generally considerably less expensive than their custom counterparts. A common size for pre-made plantation shutters is 36-by-42 inches, and pre-made shutters generally come only in unfinished or stained wood, or painted solid white.
2. Decide on a budget before you begin your plantation shutter comparison. If you want custom shutters, you're looking at a wide price range, depending on the material and style. It's a good idea to do your figuring up front, so that you can quickly eliminate some options.
3. Choose between real wood shutters and shutters made from composite materials, such as medium-density fiberboard, also known as MDF. Two main factors can guide your decision between wood and composite shutters. The first factor is price, because solid wood is always more expensive than composite wood. The second factor is health. Since composite woods are made with chemicals that can release into the air over time, some people get sick in rooms with composite furniture or decorations. If you've had any respiratory issues, such as allergies or asthma, you should strongly consider increasing your budget to allow for real wood.
4. Look at the products at a few different shutter companies to get an idea of what's a fair price and what options are available in custom or pre-made plantation shutters. Blinds.com, Shutter Classic, Custom Shutters and The Shutter Store all have online catalogs that can give you a good idea (see Resources.) Compare the options from each company in the type of shutter you want, whether wood or composite material, then search for the shutter on each site to see the price range.
