The best way to decorate cheaply is by haunting yard sales and shopping at retail stores selling at wholesale prices.
Silhouette Motif
You may not be an artist with the paintbrush, but with just a can of paint you can be enough of a Da Vinci to pull off one of the basic principles of interior design: Repetition. You can also save money over painting entire walls and make a memorable and personalized decorative statement. The principle of repetition to create an overriding motif is the painting of silhouettes on some of your walls. Painting a silhouette on a wall can be done by tracing the outline of an actual object or person or using equipment to project an image onto the wall that you trace. Keep in mind that silhouettes don't have to be black.
Decorative Touches
Some rooms only seem blah or boring, but really only lack one artful piece that will suffice in adding elan to the design. Don't fret over the idea of painting all the walls or removing the carpet or buying new furniture. Just add artful touches like decorative molding or a wallpaper border. Or paint all the trim a more vibrant color. Take those pictures frames off the wall and add wall mountings on which you place the frames--same photos, but with more style.
Painted Game Boards on Floor
If you like board games and usually play them while sitting on the floor, combine both of your loves by painting those boards directly onto the floor. The checkerboard floor design can double as a chess board, but consider replicating any board from a game you love to play.
Divided Wall Paint
A two-tone paint job that mixes a flat design with a geometric design can transform the look and feel of a room. Install some chair molding as your dividing line, and paint the molding in a boldly contrasting color. The upper wall should be painted flat, but with some textural style to it like faux leather or rag-rolling. The part of the wall beneath the chair molding should then be painted in a striking geometric pattern like checkerboard squares, stripes or diamonds.
