Prime Vinyl Siding

Prime Vinyl Siding

Choosing vinyl siding for a home exterior saves time and money that would have been spent on frequent repainting. However, the siding color will fade over time. Colors can be restored or changed by using exterior latex paint. Successful application is dependent on having a clean and dull surface. Latex paint will last longer by adding a bonding agent to a primer paint layer. A couple of weekends of work will have the vinyl siding looking like new.

Instructions

Cleaning and Deglossing

1. Place 1/4 cup of liquid detergent in the cleaner dispenser of a power washer. Set the dial to 2,500 PSI (pounds per square inch), and spray the siding from top to bottom. Rinse with clear water by removing any remaining detergent from the dispenser.

2. Cover vegetation with dropcloths, and add 1/2-cup of TSP to the power washer cleaner dispenser. Spray any areas of heavy soil, mildew or algae. Remove remaining TSP, and rinse with plain water. Give the surface an hour to dry.

3. Walk around the home and inspect for glossy areas on the vinyl. The TSP will degloss some, but there will be areas that still need a special agent used.

4. Dip a sponge mop into a bucket or paint tray containing a quality vinyl deglossing solution. These products are sold at most paint and home improvement outlets. Scrub all areas of vinyl that have a glossy appearance.

5. Allow the vinyl siding a few days to dry completely. Do not rinse the product off, as it is designed to be applied and let dry. Remove the covering from the plants and vegetation.

Applying Primer

6. Tape off all windows and doors to avoid paint overspray. Place dropcloths over the plants to keep from spraying or dripping paint on them.

7. Mix a bonding agent with a gallon of latex exterior paint. Most paint outlets carry quality bonding products. Follow label directions for exact mixture amounts.

8. Fill the airless paint sprayer with the latex and bonding agent mixture. Connect the sprayer to the power outlet and test spray a small section to adjust the spraying strength, if needed.

9. Spray an even layer of primer over all areas of the vinyl siding. Allow the primer coat three or four hours to dry before adding finish paint layers.
