Painting Suggestions For Concrete Block Structures

Paint rollers are one of the tools you will need to paint a concrete block building.

Painted concrete block buildings are virtually maintenance-free if done properly. There are two types of concrete block: smooth or split face. The split-face block, with its rough texture, will need twice as much primer and paint as the smooth-face block.

Clean Surface

Preparing the concrete block building before applying paint is the best way to ensure a finish that lasts. While water alone can remove dirt and loose paint, it is very important to remove efflorescence, a white powder that forms on the surface of the concrete. It is caused by water infiltration and requires chemicals to completely eliminate it.

Put acidic masonry cleaner into a pressure washer, spray the surface thoroughly and then use a scrub brush to get it all off.

Primer

If the concrete has never been painted before, it will need to be primed first. Use an acrylic block fill primer to neutralize the high PH level of the concrete block and fill in all the pores.

A gallon of this acrylic fill will cover approximately 200 square feet on a smooth surface and 100 square feet on a rough concrete surface.

Paint

Use a high-quality paint over the primer for best results. According to the experts at House Painting Info, the best choice Elastomeric paint. You can use any 100 percent acrylic semigloss or satin sheen exterior paint, though.

Application

Using both an airless sprayer and roller is the best way to get both the primer and finish fully into the concrete block. You want to get paint pushed deep into the pores to get a sealed, moisture-free surface.

Two people should work together for this procedure. First a thick, even coat of paint is applied with the airless sprayer and then the second person immediately presses the paint into the concrete block with the roller.
