Dark Color Painting Tips

Painting is an easy and affordable way to dramatically change the look of a room. If you are looking for a change from white, cream or beige walls, consider going for dramatic, dark and deep color on your walls. Painting walls to a dark color can be a bit more involved than painting a lighter color, but is no more difficult. Use these dark color painting tips to make your painting job go quickly and look beautiful.

Supplies and Preparation

When painting a dark color, good quality paint and rollers are crucial. You should also consider priming with a deep base tinted primer or opting for a paint with a built in primer for the best coverage. Look for thick and plush rollers for your dark paint; however, even the best quality paint will require more than one coat in a dark-paint color. Before painting, mix all of your paint cans together. Seal tightly, then shake for several minutes. Stir each can thoroughly, working pigment up from the bottom to the top before beginning to paint.

Choosing Colors

Painting a room a dark color can be a somewhat frightening prospect. Will it make the space feel cozy, dramatic or warm or will it create a small and dark room? Choose warmer tones, including reds, burgundies, plums and golds instead of deep blues or greens to add warmth to a dark colored room. Consider keeping the trim and floor in a lighter tone and painting the ceiling a slightly lighter shade than the walls. You might also consider painting a single wall a dark color in a larger room to create a dramatic focal point.

Living with Dark Color Paint

Once you have taken the plunge and painted your space a bold color, how should you decorate? Dark colors can be surprisingly versatile. Dark neutrals, including deep gold, warm browns, and even rich gray can all work with a variety of colors, including neutrals, jewel tones and even light or bright shades. A deep red paired with rich wood furniture and damask or brocade upholstery looks lush and classic, but with clean lined pieces and neutral colors can look quite modern. If you opt to paint a color you love, that makes you feel good, you are sure to love your space.
