Choose A Fresh paint Color To Coordinate With Bedding

Your paint color choice depends on the mood you want to create.

Most people base their room's color scheme on one inspirationally hued accent pillow, piece of furniture or decorative accessory. If you love the color of your bedding and want to design your room around it, you have many options for your wall color. What you choose depends on what mood you want to create. While some people prefer a bedroom that's soft and tranquil, others enjoy a bold and dynamic feel or appreciate an elegant, sophisticated atmosphere. First, define the personality you want your bedroom to have, then review potential color schemes and select your wall color.

Instructions

1. Think about how you want your bedroom to feel. Interior-Design-Tutor.net suggests that rooms designed for rest and relaxation should use soft colors from the cool side of the color wheel. Cool colors include blues, greens and purples. More active spaces call for energizing colors from the the wheel, including reds, yellows and oranges. Focus on the atmosphere you want, rather than on popular color trends. If you want to add energy to your bedroom, there's nothing wrong with bucking the norm and choosing a bold color to don your walls.

2. Look at your bedding and observe the colors it includes. Locate the main colors in your bedding on a color wheel and identify potential colors that work well with them, taking the atmosphere you want to create into consideration.

According to Interior-Design-Tutor.net, there are five color schemes you can use to help you select colors from the wheel: complementary, monochromatic, analogous, triad and split complementary. Complementary colors are opposite each other on the color wheel. A split complementary scheme uses the colors on either side of the main color's complement. Both create high drama through color contrast. A triad color scheme uses three equally spaced colors. Maintain unity in the room by including one piece that incorporates all three colors, and use the lightest of the three to adorn your walls and avoid garishness. Analogous color schemes use hues next to each other on the wheel for a cohesive, traditional look. For a touch of sophistication, Interior-Design-Tutor.net recommends a monochromatic scheme, which uses the same color in different tones, tints and shades.

3. Look online for paint vendors with color-matching Internet applications. These online programs can help you find other eye-pleasing color combinations without using a color wheel to do your own matching. Behr Color Smart (see Resources) can help you create schemes based on a color you choose. Use the program to select colors as close to your bedding as possible, and see if manufacturer-suggested schemes include wall colors that appeal to you.

4. Go to your local paint or hardware store, armed with your color wheel selections, online color matching results, and a sample of your bedding if possible (a pillowcase, for example). Pick out two or three finalist wall colors by matching paint samples to the colors you picked at home and holding your bedding next to them to see how the colors interact. Ask a sales associate if you can purchase paint samples or small cans for color testing purposes.

5. Paint a small section on each of the walls in your bedroom in each of your sample colors. After the paint dries, observe how the colors look at different times of day when the light hits them. Choose the color that you like the best and return to the paint store to buy the full amount, asking the sales person to make any tinting adjustments to the final color as necessary.
