Remove Fresh paint From Outdoors Brick Steps

Use a wire brush to scrape paint from the mortar.

Paint removal is a painstaking endeavor often fraught with unforeseen risk. When amateur do-it-yourselfers attempt to eliminate paint from relatively fragile surfaces such as porcelain, vinyl and wood, they often leave the underlying surface marred with unsightly abrasion scars. Fortunately, if you need to remove paint from exterior brick steps, you're in luck, as brick is durable enough to endure aggressive removal techniques. Know the appropriate strategy to employ and the potential dangers associated with working with flammable stripping solvents, or you could end up with unintended consequences.

Instructions

1. Remove as much paint as possible from the exterior brick steps, using focused water pressure from a pressure washer. Wait two to four hours for the steps to dry.

2. Scrape large strips of flaking paint from the exterior brick steps, using a putty knife.

3. Put on rubber gloves.

4. Apply paint stripping solvent to the top brick step, using a 3- to 4-inch paintbrush, manufactured for oil-based paints.

5. Wait 60 seconds for the solvent to loosen the brick paint. Remove the loosened paint, using the putty knife. Use a wire brush to scrape paint from the mortar between each brick. Sand stubborn bits of paint from the steps, using a coarse, 80-grit sandpaper. Continue until each step is free from paint.
