Traditional house colors vary depending on the style of home. The era in which a home was designed influences which exterior colors are traditional and most popular. Exterior house colors include the main color of the home as well as accent colors that may be used on the roof, shutters, porch or door.
Cape Cod Colors
Cape cods are generally small, cottage-style homes with a low roof. Traditional colors for the main exterior of the home are whites or colonial blues. Accent colors vary, and include deep greens and reds.
Victorian Colors
Victorian-style homes are typically two stories with large windows and ornate embellishments. During the Victorian era, home colors included pastels. Traditional home colors for a Victorian-style house include soft grays, pinks and other soft pastel colors.
Colonial Colors
Colonial homes are similar to Victorian-style homes but without the ornate details. A colonial home is typically two stories, rectangular and simple. The entry way to the home may have ornate detail to contrast the simplistic style of the rest of the home. Traditional colors for a colonial include white, bright yellow, blues and darker hues including deep greens.
Crafstman Colors
Craftsman homes have a distinctive look with eaves that hang over the home and a low-pitched roof. Traditional exterior colors for a craftsman-style home include neutral colors such as tans, beige and white.
Tudor Colors
A Tudor-style home is recognizable due to steeply pitches roofs and a variety of texture on the exterior of the home, such as stucco or stone. Traditionally, exterior paint is kept in a light color with dark accents to bring out the unique features in a Tudor home. Traditional color choices include neutral tans, soft grays and darker neutral tones for accent paint.
Federal Colors
Federal-style homes include a large cornice on a low roof, and the home may have columns defining the front entry to the home. Traditional colors for federal-style homes are bright, deep reds and blues. White trim is a traditional choice for accent paint.
