Fresh paint Shake Siding

Wash and prime the shakes before you paint them.

Wood shakes are ill-suited for paint adhesion. If you nonetheless plan to paint shake siding, you must take some important steps: Condition the siding with a bonding primer before you paint, or the finish coating will eventually flake and peel. Choose a finish formulated for harsh temperatures and weather elements, or the shakes probably will shed their new finish. Use the correct application technique, or you may end up with uneven coverage.

Instructions

1. Wash the shake siding, using a pressure washer. Remove dust and cobwebs from each shake to avoid adhesion difficulties. Allow the shakes to dry for 24 hours.

2. Prime the clean shake siding, using a roller. Proceed left to right, moving your paint roller vertically.

3. Force the primer into the awkward areas that lie between individual shakes, using a nylon brush. Dab the brush against these areas to encourage even coverage. Allow the shakes to dry for two hours.

4. Use tap water to wash primer from all your tools.

5. Paint the primed shake siding, using the roller. Proceed left to right, moving your paint roller vertically.

6. Force the paint into the awkward areas that lie between individual shakes, using the nylon brush. Dab the brush against these areas to encourage even coverage. Allow the shakes to dry for two hours.
